Krishnagiri Additional District Court on Thursday judged 5 persons belonging to a family to rigorous imprisonment (RI) in association with the murder of a farmer here.

While 2 women were awarded 2 years of RI, 3 others got ten years of RI.

Periyaswamy 45, a farmer at Vettiyambatti Karungannan Kottai near Krishnagiri, was not in better terms with his cousin brother Madhavan 50 over a land dispute. Both the families used to quarrel often over the issue.

On Dec 4, 2004, Sharadha, wife of Periyaswamy, went till some heated exchanges with Madhavan’s wife Rani. Apparently, Madhavan and his family members jolted Periyasamy, wife and son. An injured Periyaswamy, Sharadha and son Govindaswamy were taken to the Krishnagiri GH. Periyaswamy demised on Dec 9, 2004.

Kandhikuppam Police held Madhavan, his wife Rani 45, sons Ammasi 27 and Krishnan 22 and daughter-in-law Shantha 22. Knowing the case, Krishnagiri Additional District Judge Kumaraguru awarded ten years of RI to Madhavan and his sons Ammasi and Krishnan and penalized a fine of Rs 1,000 each. Failure to pay fine would earn another year of RI, the judge observed.

Rani and her daughter-in-law Shantha were sentenced 2 years of RI. A penalty of Rs 1,500 each was also imposed.
