Like in the offline world backups are an important part of a webmaster’s disaster prevention and recovery strategy in the online world. Websites are usually made up of files on a web server and contents stored in a database. The best option to backup those files and databases is to run a cron job that backs up all files and moves them to another backup location so that the websites can be recovered even if the server should be damaged (storing the files on the same server can be problematic if the hard drive fails for instance which can mean that neither the current files and databases nor the backups can be accessed).Webmasters who want to create a quick local copy of their MySQL database have also several options at hand. They can connect via ssh to the server and create a database backup or use phpMyAdmin if the database is not that big.Another comfortable option is the offsite backup software MySQL Backup Tool for the Windows operating system. The Open Source software can be

I just thought I would post some thoughts on things I’ve learned over the past couple of years about backup strategies. This is what seems to work very well for me.
When I first heard the saying, “A file doesn’t exist unless it is in 3 places” I thought that was overkill. But that is really something to live by, because you never know what will happen due to hardware failure or just user stupidity.
First of all I import all my original files onto an internal hard disk. As soon as they are imported Carbonite begins doing an online backup of the images so I have a secure offsite backup. Also every night any new pictures imported are automatically backed up to my Data Robotics Drobo which is similar to two backups in itself because of it’s data redundancy, see http://www.drobo.com for more information. I don’t delete the original files off the memory cards immediately but wait until the following day when I know everything is backed up securely

HP appears to have dropped support for their online backup add-in for Window Home Server, and are now promoting other backup services. Their add-in used Amazon S3 for storage. I have used JungleDisk on my desktop machines to backup, so I am pretty used to that storage system. But since it appears that HP is dropping support, I wanted to find a solution to have an offsite backup for some of the files on the server.
I am trying CloudBerry Backup for Windows Home Server. This is very similar to HP’s online backup add-in and the old JungleDisk Windows Home server. CloudBerry lets you pick any share or a connected drive to backup. Also you can set a time range when backups can happen.
I did have a problem after setting this up. I has some paths on some of the shares that were too long for Windows (These were copied from my linux computer). When CloudBerry encountered this error, it listed the error in the error email that was sent.
I will probably pay for CloudBerry

Comcast the largest cable operator in USA has launched a new service called “Comcast Secure Backup and Share” , an online backup service. This service is powered by Mozy, a known online backup provider currently owned by EMC. Secure Backup & Share automatically backs up files on your computer to an offsite location (i.e. somewhere other than your house) so you can rest assured your files are safe. Also, you can access your files (think wedding and vacation photos or a video from your child’s soccer game) remotely, and share them with your friends and family on a variety of devices (including mobile devices).
High-speed Internet customers automatically receive the Standard 2GB Storage Plan with their subscription. Two gigs is enough storage to back up about 500 music files or 10,000 documents (for the sake of this example we’ve assumed that an average music file is about 4MB and an average document runs about 200 KB).

In many of my posts I have discussed various methods of backing up your data. When I talked about the methods, I try to stress backing up your data offsite. It is important to do so for a variety of reasons. If you are unsure about what I mean with regards to offsite backup, then read on.For those that haven't heard the term offsite backup, then I'll explain what it means. Offsite backup is simply moving your backed up data to a different location than your original data.
The biggest reason why this is important is because it helps protect your data. Imagine if your data was in your home. You backup the data to a DVD and then put the DVD in a closet, or leave it on your desk. Now imagine if your home was to suffer a terrible disaster, such as a fire, and everything was destroyed. Since your computer and your backed up data were in the home, all of your data would be lost. Now, if you move that DVD to another home, such as a family member's or a friend's home, then if a fire had destroy

While you should backup your data on a regular basis, it is also important to make sure your data backups are safe.
Always make multiple copies of your backups. When backing up your data, never make just one copy, always make at least two copies. This will help prevent losing any data if your backup copy becomes corrupted. Optical discs, such as DVD's are notorious for becoming unreadable after a specific period of time.
Store backup copies offsite. While external hard drives are great for backing up your data, it is also important to copy your data to removable media. This allows you to then move your data to another location for safe-keeping. USB flash drives, DVD's and online storage are perfect to keep your backed up data safe.
Use high-quality media. This point is very important for those that use DVD's for saving their data. Not all DVD's are created equally, and those cheap, bargain DVD's won't last very long. I recommend you look at high-quality DVD's from Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim
